BitTorrent is a program used for file sharing. Basically the way it works is, you load a torrent file into the BitTorrent client (a torrent file is a small file which points to other files, for example, a number of mp3s, or a movie, or even a Linux CD), the BitTorrent client then connects to a central server, known as a tracker (the tracker's address is stored in the torrent file).

The tracker keeps track of all people who have the torrent file loaded. People who have already downloaded the files which the torrent file points to are known as seeders. People who aren't seeders are known as peers (that is, they haven't got the complete set of files which the torrent file points to). The peers find seeders through the tracker.

The seeders send files to the peers, and the peers also send files to each other, until everyone becomes a seeder. The more peers and seeders there are on a particular torrent file, the faster new peers can download the files (generally).

There are many versions of the original BitTorrent client, such as Azureus (popular, nice GUI with many features), BitTornado (what I use, more simplistic than Azureus), and a few other ones which I'm unfamiliar with (ABC, BitComet, etc).

Due to the peer-to-peer nature of BitTorrent, uploading is very important to the health of a torrent file (if nobody sends data to anyone else, then no one can download anything).

Just as a note to anyone here on Telstra ADSL or cable .. you will have to be careful of your monthly download quota when downloading through BitTorrent, since Telstra counts both uploads and downloads together! Most other ISPs do not do this. Remember uploading is important with torrents because you send data to the other peers, just like they send data to you.

go to bittorrent.com i think it is. download the client.

go to the formentioned sites, search for something like "family guy season 1" ... click on the torrent file link wait maybe 2 hours depending on your collection.

and there you have a dvd


.... the thing is, the only stuff you will be able to get is stuff that is popular. south park, family guy, popular movies, popular songs..... thats why i love it, small independant musicians dont loose out, only big record / movie comapnies do.

i prefere dc++ ,,, easy to find specific genres n stuff

If you want big broadband downloads I get 25 gigs a month at 512K speed for 39.95 through a mob called ???hmm not sure of their name but their phone number is 07 55 760 611. These guys are good they set up my router and did all the tech stuff for nothing in my home at a time that was good for me. Have not yet had 1 problem in 6 months of being withthem. Fuk telstra and optus they give you jack sheet and charge $40 a month for 1 gig.

Its like broadband 2 i think, can get some very fast downloads for next to dial up fee's. IInet has some great deals too, and VOIP telephone plans thatare very well priced.
